Walks around Christchurch

Now the weather is getting warmer, it’s the time to start exploring the nature walks around Christchurch, and there are some awesome ones all within driving distance of Haka Lodge Christchurch!

Mt Thomas walking track

The walking tracks of Mount Thomas give you options ranging from one hour family-friendly round trips to longer walks to the summit of Mount Thomas where the views are spectacular.

It is about 60km northwest of Christchurch by Road (1 hour from Haka Lodge) and is reached through Rangiora and Loburn, or Oxford and the Ashley Gorge.

Once you get to the carpark, you can decide on which walk to do. I chose to go to the summit and it was well worth it. It’s a beautiful winding track through a plantation forest, and then beech forest as you climb. They say it’s 3 hours one way but I did it in 4.5 hours return.

Godley Head – Taylor’s Mistake Walking track. 3 Hour round trip.

Just a 15 minute drive from Haka Lodge. Start and end the walk from the car park at Taylor’s Mistake Beach.  Enjoy this popular sandy beach and surfing  spot and take in the quaint and quirky holiday homes near the start of the track.

Half way along the cliff edge track, you can veer off to the left which will take you down to another beach where you can get up close and personal to even more quirky beach houses. The rocks are covered with a beautiful purple flower which looks magical and the sea view is incredible.
